Sound of Music Auditions

The Bandon Playhouse in conjunction with the 10th Anniversary of the Sprague Community Theater will come alive with The Sound of Music. Jeff Norris will direct the Rodgers and Hammerstein production which will run February 19th through March 7th 2010; this classic and endearing musical is based on the Story of the Trapp Family Singers. It features an unforgettable Rodgers and Hammerstein score, including “My Favorite Things,” “Do-Re-Mi” and “Climb Every Mountain.”

At least 23 main characters are needed. This includes nine women, five girls ages 5 to 16, six men, and two boys ranging in age from 11 up to 14 years of age. “Extras are needed, and anyone who would like to be a part of the production, not as a main character, can be chosen for parts including neighbors and nuns, many of these may include some singing as backup,” Jeff Norris, the director said. This is good exposure and a great experience for new actors who want to be in the theater. In preparation of the auditions, Norris said there will be reading from the script. He wants people to keep in mind that a stage performance is different from the movie. The hardest part will be choosing the Von Trapp children. We are looking for those who fit together and look like family more than anything,” he said. First is finding the talented and second they need to look alike, he added. “There are some real talented children in this area, but we only need seven,” Norris said. The performance takes more than just children. We still need lots of people for the nuns and Nazis roles,” he added.

Interested persons also need to come prepared to sing either with or without music. There will be an accompanist there, but if they have a favorite song they probably need to bring their own music, said Janice Kendall, the Vocal Director. Children should also be prepared to sing Do-Re-Mi, Maria candidates, “The Sound of Music”, and of course, “Climb every mountain” should be prepared for the Mother Abbess character. The part of Captain Van Trapp has already been cast with Dr. Roger Sims of Coos Bay in the part. However, the stage production is different than the movie in where the Baroness Elsa Schraeder and Max Detweiler both have signing parts.

With such a large cast and stage support needed, the upcoming production of “The Sound of Music” at the Sprague Community Theater has many opportunities for folks interested in theater. We are holding the Sound of Music productions much earlier because it is a larger production and it takes a lot more time to learn the dances and the music, said Paul Hay, President of the Bandon Playhouse. As one of the largest productions that the Bandon Playhouse has undertaken, it has been many years since “The Sound of Music” has been performed in this area and we are very excited about having another Rodgers and Hammerstein show start off the 10th Anniversary of the Sprague Community Theater. South Pacific, a Rodgers and Hammerstein classic, was the first production put on at the Sprague Community Theater over 10 years ago.

Music Auditions will be held on Sunday, November 8th (only). Children auditions will be from 3:00 to 4:30 and the adults from 4:30 to 6:00p.m that same evening. Monday, we will have the acting portion of the auditions from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm for all ages. Call backs will be scheduled for Thursday November 12th. All auditions will be held at the Sprague Community Theater.

Show times will February 19th, 20th, and 21st, 26th, 27th, and 28th, and March 5th, 6th, and 7th. For more information you can visit our website at www.bandonplayhouse.org, or contact Jeff Norris at 347-7426 or Paul Hay at 347-2900
